Keep reading to learn more about dentures, their benefits, and some alternatives.

What are Dentures?

Dentures are false teeth that replace missing teeth to restore proper chewing functions. The two types of dentures are complete dentures (replace all your teeth) and partial dentures (replace some of your teeth). We ensure your dentures fit your mouth exactly, so they will look like your natural teeth and feel as comfortable as possible.

Who Needs Dentures?

You might need dentures if you are missing all or some of your teeth and have trouble eating. Dentures are one option to restore your chewing function. They also help you feel less self-conscious about your missing teeth.

Benefits of Dentures

Most people would love to keep their natural teeth. When that’s not possible, dentures are a good option. The most important reason to get dentures is to aid in chewing food. Your body needs proper nutrition, and dentures help get that nutrition into your body in the proper size bites. Dentures also help you speak more clearly, and they keep your face looking full and natural. With natural-looking dentures in place, you’ll feel more confident about the way you look.

Differences in Dentures

With dental technology growing and changing every day, dentures have become more varied and customizable to each mouth. Different kinds of denture options include:

  • Removable complete dentures. A complete set of teeth attached to a flexible base fits over your gums. If your bone structure is good and supportive, we may be able to use suction to keep them in place. Otherwise, we use denture adhesive. You remove them at night and for cleaning.
  • Removable partial dentures. A partial set of teeth is held in place with clasps that attach easily to your existing teeth.
  • Implant supported dentures. Instead of resting on your gums, these dentures are fixed on implants, which have been embedded into your bone.
  • Implant retained dentures. These are fixed to your dental arches with fewer implants than implant supported dentures. They snap in place and need to be removed at night and when they need cleaning.

How Much Do Dentures Cost?

Some dental insurances cover all or part of the cost. With no insurance, the cost varies due to the type of dentures. In general, full and partial dentures are less costly than implant supported or retained dentures. Talk to your denture specialist to find out how much they will cost you.

Do Dentures Feel Normal?

You have to get adjusted to wearing dentures. Chewing with dentures is a different feeling than chewing with natural teeth. Your gums have to adjust, as well. The gums undergo thickening similar to how calluses form on your hands and feet.

Denture Alternatives

If removable dentures are too uncomfortable for you, or you feel like they move around too much, the alternative is fixed dentures. Fixed dentures require 4-6 implants placed in each upper and lower arch of your mouth. Then, a full arch bridge is fabricated and attached to the implants. This requires a surgical procedure, including time for your mouth to heal around the implants. Let your dentist know if you are interested in dental implants and fixed dentures.
