Cosmetic Dental Whitening
Teeth whitening is one of our most popular cosmetic dentistry options. Learn more about the dental whitening process and how it can greatly improve the appearance of your smile.
What causes teeth staining?
- Dark liquids such as coffee, tea, and red wine.
- Tobacco
- Certain medications
- Aged teeth may have most of the white enamel worn off, revealing the yellow dentin beneath it.
Ask your dentist if your stained or discolored teeth can be whitened using dental whitening procedures.
Who is a good candidate for teeth whitening?
You could benefit from professional teeth whitening if you meet the following criteria:
- Your teeth are stained yellow. Brown or gray stains are harder to whiten.
- You do not normally have dental sensitivity. The whitening procedure may cause sensitivity, so talk to your dentist if you have a history of sensitive teeth.
- You do not have any tooth restorations that are designed to match your current tooth color. The whitening procedure does not work on tooth restorations, so you’ll end up with different colored teeth.
What is the difference between at-home whitening and professional teeth whitening at the dentist?
At 4th Street Dental Studio, we offer prefabricated disposable trays, custom at-home whitening trays, and in-office teeth whitening procedures. All methods are effective. Which one you choose depends on your preference.
The at-home trays allow you the convenience of whitening whenever you have time at home. It usually takes several weeks to achieve the desired shade of white. It is easier to manage tooth sensitivity by whitening your teeth at home over a longer period of time while also using sensitivity relief toothpaste.
Our in-office teeth whitening procedure uses Colgate Professional gel. In one appointment, we can get the same results that you’d achieve over several weeks with the at-home trays.

Dental Whitening Process
The dental whitening process begins with an initial exam. The dentist will examine your teeth, find out the causes of the stains, and let you know if you are a good candidate for the teeth whitening procedure.
If you decide to use at-home trays, we’ll discuss whether you should get the prefabricated disposable trays or trays that are customized to your mouth.
If you opt for the in-office whitening procedure, we’ll schedule another appointment. At the whitening appointment, we’ll use a lip retractor to keep your mouth open, and we’ll protect your gums with a rubber dam. Then, we will coat your teeth with the whitening gel. We use a special light to cure the gel for about 20 minutes. When the time is up, we remove the old gel, coat your teeth again, and repeat the curing process. This may continue for three or four times until your teeth are the desired shade of white.
What to Expect After Cosmetic Teeth Whitening
After whitening your teeth, you may experience some sensitivity. We recommend using sensitive relief toothpaste two weeks before the procedure and two weeks after. Other than sensitivity, the dental whitening procedure does not cause pain.
Teeth whitening is not permanent. Natural teeth stain over time, so it may be necessary to refresh your teeth every year with customized take-home trays or disposable trays.
Teeth Whitening Cost
Dental insurance plans do not cover the cost of teeth whitening. Give us a call if you’d like to discuss the specific cost of your whitening procedure.
